Computer Networks Lab

Computer Networks Lab

This lab is designed to provide practical experience with the principles and technologies covered in EE462 Introduction to Computer Networks. It offers a comprehensive environment for students to explore network design, implementation, and management using both physical hardware and virtualized environments.

The lab features:

  •
Network Simulation Software: Tools like Packet Tracer or GNS3 allow students to design and simulate complex network topologies, analyze network behavior, and troubleshoot potential issues in a risk-free virtual environment.
  •
Virtual Machines: Software like VMware or VirtualBox enables students to create and manage virtual machines, facilitating the exploration of different operating systems and network services without dedicated hardware.
  •
Networking Equipment: Hands-on experience with industry-standard Cisco devices, including Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points, allows students to configure and analyze real-world network infrastructure.
  •
Rack Servers: Students gain experience with server hardware and operating systems, learning about server roles, configuration, and management within a network environment.
  •
Network Cabinets: Multiple network cabinets provide a realistic setting for students to practice cable management, organization, and the physical implementation of network connections.

This lab enables students to:

  •
Build and configure network topologies: Gain practical experience with IP addressing, subnetting, routing protocols, and network security.
  •
Analyze network performance: Use monitoring tools to troubleshoot network problems and optimize performance.
  •
Explore virtualization concepts: Understand the role of virtual machines in networking and cloud computing.
  •
Develop skills in network administration: Gain experience with server management and network operating systems.

This hands-on lab provides a strong foundation in computer networking concepts and prepares students for careers in network design, administration, and security.
