Electrical Machines Laboratory

Welcome to Electrical Machines lab facilities at King Abdul-Aziz University (KAU) in Electrical and Computer Engineering department.

The Electrical Machines Lab is located on the ground floor in Engineering building (A40 ) in room number L4C03.

The Electrical Machines laboratory is equipped with basic and advanced electrical machines to facilitates the familiarization of students with single-phase and three-phase transformers, several types of DC machines, structures and operations of a variety of single-phase and three-phase AC machines. Students can also do projects to gain hands-on experience. Equipment includes: fixed and mobile consoles and power supplies, resistive and capacitive loads, brakes and speed control rheostats, transformers, dissectible transformer (i.e., a transformer that can be taken apart), DC motors/generators and dynamometers, wound rotor induction motors, synchronous motors/generators, induction motors, motor starters, watt meters, tachometer, torque meters and slip meters, power factor controller, motor circuit trainer, computer-aided instruction motor, an oscillography recorder, a X-Y plotter. The lab is adequate for instruction and suitable for research.

Experiments conducted in the lab are designed to concretize the theoretical understanding of concepts related to Electrical machines Some of experiments done in our Machines Lab:

  •    Load test on Single-phase Transformer and Three Phase Transformers.
  •    Torque Vs Speed Characteristic of D.C Shunt Motor, D.C Series Motor, and D.C Compound Motor.
  •    Voltage Regulation of Synchronous Machine and Alternator.
  •    Synchronization of Synchronous Machine.
  •    Squirrel cage motor using MOMO Software.
  •    Characteristics of Slip ring Induction motor.
